These tents are not open to the general public – they are for CAMRA members and their guests.

General information

You will need to pay for admission to the ground at the gate (unless you are a KCCC member, of course)

Admission to the tents is free to CAMRA members (show your membership card, please). Members need to sign themselves and their guests into the visitor’s book (you can bring as many guests as you like!) We ask guests to pay £2 per day to help cover our overheads.

We have seating for about 40 people in front of our tent, or you can take your beer anywhere else in the ground (as long as it’s in a plastic glass if you go away from the tent)

We sell an ever-changing range of real beers, wine, soft drinks, and usually cider.

Because of new catering regulations at the ground, we can no longer sell food (except the cakes which have been donated in aid of our charities). Food is available at various outlets around the ground, or you can bring your own.

The tents are run in aid of charities, and we welcome any sponsorship. Many of the beers are donated by breweries.

You can join CAMRA at the tent. We also offer cricket tent only membership at a reduced price.

Save money by buying ground admission tickets in advance. Details are on the KCCC membership brochure which can be downloaded from the Membership 2013 section of www.kentccc.com. There are also many different membership packages.

By John Hedington (Social Secretary)

It has been another busy and enjoyable year for the branch on the social front. We started the year 2012 with our Christmas Social and pub crawl, with two large groups busy testing the beer in potential GBG pubs in Canterbury. The results were very helpful in selecting our pub entries for the 2013 Good Beer Guide. A most enjoyable day, with a very good turnout.

In early February, we had the first of two joint social events with Dover, Deal and Sandwich (DDS) branch, visiting some of their best pubs in the Sandwich, Deal and Walmer area at the back end of a really cold and snowy period. We visited some gems. In April, we had the first of two of our popular mystery tours, with Rory Kehoe taking us round some excellent watering holes in the area roughly between Ashford and Faversham. The pick of them was probably The Black Lion at Lynstead, a friendly locals pub with a convivial landlord and an excellent well kept range of Goacher’s beers.

Maysawthesecondofourjointsocials withDDS and also Ashford, Folkestone and Romney Marsh Branch. Onawarmsunnydayandafter lunchandacoupleof pints of pub brewed beer in The Foundry, we took them on a circular tour of some of the best pubs in the City of Canterbury. We ended at The New Inn, who provided an excellent buffet for the large group that turned up and had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a good advert for the quality and range of beers in our best pubs in the city.

In June, we had a mini coach tour of seven of our branch country pubs that are inaccessible by public transport. After a splendid pub lunch washed down by some very good pints of Shepherd Neame at the charming Compasses Inn at Crundale, we drove round the local countryside on a warm sunny afternoon. The pick of the pubs for friendliness, character and bar billiards (!) was The Two Sawyers at Woolage Green, just off the A2 Dover Road and right on the edge of our branch boundaries.

In early August, we had one of our Stagecoach Explorer days out, visiting some excellent hostelries on another warm sunny day in Sandgate, Hythe, Folkestone and Elham. In September, we had what is planned to be the first of an annual memorial pub crawl in recognition of Kieron Drum, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. My thanks to Matt Pringle for putting a lot of work and effort into organising this event, based in the Twickenham area of London. The relevance of this is that Kieron was planning this event before he died.

November was busy month with a second mystery tour which is reported in a separate article and a day trip to the Flemish city of Bruges. Despite the awful weather, our intrepid group of fifteen travellers had a wonderful day, visiting some of the splendid (but packed!) bars of

Bruges and sampling a very wide range of Belgian beers. As I write, the annual Christmas dinner at The Dolphin lies ahead.

Interspersed between these events, were Gill’s various beer tents, which included a wet cricket week at Tunbridge Wells, a drier one but with a day’s loss of play at Canterbury, the Haymaking Festival at Hambrook, where again it poured with torrential rain but we sold out of beer, the Hop

festival at Faversham, and an exhibition of beer at Eastbridge Hospital in the City. Thanks to Gill for all the very hard work put into these events. We also visited (amongst many others) the Green Hop Festival in the Dane John Gardens and the September beer festival at The Haywain at Bramling. Other events included presentations to our three Pub of the Year branch winners, The Dolphin in Canterbury, The Prince of Wales in Herne Bay and The New Inn in Canterbury.

My thanks to all who well supported these events and who contributed to some marvellous moments. The only sadness was the loss of poor Kieron.

sample some excellent local brews, all in the shadow of the 14th century Master of Eastbridge’s Lodge. This splendid, timber-framed house is
normally hidden behind a 3m brick wall but by kind permission of the Master of Eastbridge, Brother Austin SSF, the courtyard was made available
to CAMRA for the entire weekend. As far as is known, this Celebration was the first time Eastbridge Hospital (a 12th century pilgrims’ hostel)
has permitted alcohol to be served on its premises in over 800 years! To acknowledge this, the Celebration was officially opened by Canterbury’s
Lord Mayor, Cllr. Robert Waters and one of the first guests was local MP Julian Brazier, who popped in to lend CAMRA his support (and enjoy a beer!)
Timed to coincide with the long-established Hop Hoodening Festival, guests at the Eastbridge event were entertained by local Morris Men, fiercesome
sword dancers and some very excellent clog dancing ladies. A great range of beer and ciders, all from the Canterbury area, was on offer and judging
by the favourable reaction of the many guests relaxing in the leafy courtyard, any re-run of the Eastbridge Celebration in 2013 will be warmly appreciated.

Normally blessed with excellent weather, this July’s Hambrook Festival was totally awash but happily not just with driving rain but withsome excellent, locally brewed Beers and Ciders. About 500 visitors braved the elements and some 30 stallholders entertained them, with their skills, crafts and home made produce. The CAMRA tent proved to be a most popular place to stand in and stay dry, not least withthe Festival’s star turn, BBC weather presenter Kaddy Lee-Preston, who was originally booked to open the event. Joining in the Battle ofBritain spirit, Kaddy spent the entire afternoon at the Festival, supporting and encouraging stallholders and visitors alike, making sure in doingso, that she was never too far away from a refreshing drop of Real Ale! Kaddy turned out to be no stranger to the delights of a locally brewedpint and declared a particular liking for Dark Star’s Hophead Ale. It may have been appalling weather but the CAMRA tent sold out and we’re all looking forward to a dry 2013 Hambrook Haymaking Festival!

For many years now, the mystery tour has been one of the most popular events on the local branch social calendar. As the name suggests, it is pub crawl around the Kent countryside on which only the organiser and the coach driver know the location of the pubs that we will be visiting during the evening. To the rest of us, it is a complete mystery until we arrive! I was lucky in that I inherited a well run and longstanding event from my predecessor, Mike Galliers.

The most recent mystery tour organised in early November had all the ingredients that make it so enjoyable. Firstly, enthusiastic and capable organisers in this case Gary and John Blower. Their job was to plan a practical pub crawl within the boundaries of Kent but taking us outside the branch area, to sort out five (or very occasionally six) pubs and sensible timings in each of them, to liaise with our driver, not to let us know what or where the pubs are and then to make sure we all keep good time on the night. My role as social organiser is to sort out a date with the driver, always a Saturday night, to define the pickup points, to advertise the event and most importantly to take bookings and to collect enough money to be able to pay the driver. For the recent mystery tour, the cost was £14 for each of the sixteen people who attended. Pickups, as usual were outside The Ship Centurion in Whitstable and The Unicorn in Canterbury. The driver of our luxury mini coach for the past six or so years has been Steve who runs ASM Coaches in Whitstable and who has expertly and cheerfully navigated us round the depths of Kent and ensured that we run to time and plan!

The next ingredient is the people on the coach and for many years we have been supported by an excellent and good natured group of people who have always behaved impeccably despite copious amounts of beer. There is always keen but friendly competition amongst some of us to guess correctly the next pub on the route! One very sad recent loss is Kieron Drum, who regularly attended the mystery tours and helped me organise a couple of them. I did the driving and Kieron did (most of) the beer testing!

The final ingredients are the pubs and, of course, the quality of beer. The November mystery tour took us to The Darnley Arms at Cobham, an attractive village near Gravesend, The Cock Inn at Luddesdown, The Black Horse & Hoodens at Borough Green, The Park Gate Inn at Hollingbourne and finally The Bowl inn at Charing. Four of these pubs are listed in the current Good Beer Guide. Our mystery tours over the years have taken us to some absolute gems and this was no exception. The Cock Inn at Luddesdown is the quintessential English pub dating from the 18th Century. Two bars with a smaller drinking area within one of them, old world and genuine charm, a friendly landlord and customers, good beer and a bar billiard table. What more could you want and long may pubs like this remain! The Bowl in Charing is another excellent 16th Century pub that we had been to on a previous mystery tour many years ago. It is a yardstick of the quality that this pub relies on its beer rather than food for its popularity and customers. Again an excellent range of well kept beers in very pleasant and comfortable surrounds. The Darnley Arms was a friendly and traditional local with two bars. The Black Horse and Hoodens was a relaxed roadhouse with a large bar with three distinct drinking areas. The Park Gate Inn was a very comfortable pub with a strong emphasis on dining but not to the detriment of the drinker. To add to the magic of the evening it was the weekend of Guy Fawkes night and we had fireworks on display throughout the evening.

The range and quality of beers is an essential ingredient and, bearing in mind that even the better pubs have the occasional off day, we have been very lucky over the years. In this case, the pub at Borough Green had a couple of suspect beers but once reported to the friendly and most efficient barman, our beers were changed without any hassle.

The range of beers is also important. Over the years, with the inception and huge growth in the number of micro breweries, the choice of beers in our pubs has increased significantly and the recent pub crawl was no exception. The 5 pubs we visited offered 18 different beers from 14 breweries, 9 of which were micro breweries. The Cock at Luddesdown had the widest range and served Shepherd Neame Master Brew, Adnams Broadside and Lighthouse, Goachers Dark Mild (which was my choice and was magnificent), St. Austell Proper Job and Trelawny and Franklins English Garden from Bexhill. My thanks to Jenny Lyons who logged the different beers during the evening. I would never have remembered them all even the following morning!

Over the years there have been huge advances in communications which have helped in the planning and running of the mystery tours and notably the mobile phone and the sat nav. This has enabled Steve our driver to take us round some very rural locations effortlessly and has also saved a lot of time in the planning of these events. Nevertheless, Kieron and I still managed to get lost in Dymchurch when planning a mystery tour during a busy Summer period a couple of years ago!

The first mystery tour that Kate, my wife and I attended was in May 2001 and was organised by Gill and Gerry Keay. For the record, we visited the almost statutory five pubs, in this case The Duke of Cumberland at Barham, The Jackdaw at Denton, The Fox at Temple Ewell, The Plough at Ripple and The FitzwalterArms at Goodnestone. This must have left a lasting impression because since then there have been fifteen further mystery tours of which I have only missed one. In that time we have visited 76 different pubs across Kent from the Isles of Sheppey and Thanet to the Romney Marshes, and the villages around Maidstone and the Medway Towns. We have been as near to France as you can get (St. Margaret’s Bay) and close to the border with East Sussex and Greater London. We have even been up the creek (!) to visit The Shipwright Arms at Hollowshore near Faversham.

Some of the most memorable pubs include The Red Lion at Snargate close to the Sussex border and The Carpenter’s Arms at Coldred near Dover. Both have been in the same family for many, many years and retain something of a 1940′s/ 1950′s charm and decor. Other memorable pubs include The Dering Arms at Pluckley, The Yew Tree Inn at Barfrestone (now sadly closed), The Blacksmith Arms at Wormshill, The White Hart at Newenden (again on the Sussex border), and The Rose and Crown at Perry Wood. The Cock Inn at Luddesdown as mentioned earlier is up with these fantastic pubs.

There are many memories from our mystery tours. We watched maggot racing at The Carpenter’s Arms at Coldred and some us won and lost money in betting which of them would win. We listened to rock music at The Elephant at Faversham. We were served by one of the oldest pub landladies (Doris) in the country at The Red Lion at Snargate. We were escorted in and out of a certain pub near Faversham, the gents toilet was locked and we were told not to mention CAMRA. This was quite sad really because our behaviour is always exemplary. When we went to The Coastguard at St. Margaret’s Bay our mobile phones all switched to the French network.

With the sad loss of so many pubs over the last few years, it is getting increasingly difficult to find good country pubs that aren’t food orientated. But we have and we continue to find some excellent hostelries, often tucked away in the middle of nowhere.

There has never been a shortage of volunteers to organise the mystery tours and Steve Lilley and Jo Dennis have volunteered to organise our next one which will be in the spring next year 2013. The date will be advertised early in the new year and why not try one out for yourself. Who knows, it may become a habit like it did to me! Long live the mystery tour.
